We miss the mark if we think of church life as we do about restaurants. When we go out to eat, we consider the menu on offer, the atmosphere, the welcome, the cost. Why? Because when we go out to eat we're buying a service, not giving one. So we'd get a lot of quizzical looks indeed if, when entering the restaurant of choice for the evening, we started making the rounds of the tables, introducing ourselves, asking how we might pray for people's needs, or offering to shine shoes. At the restaurant we want a comfortable evening with no one to bother us, that's it. If the garçon is dour, the cooking dreadful or the check too dear, we vow never to return.
But that's not the kind of thinking we need when we're seeking to honor God in the local assembly. The church of Jesus Christ has many weaknesses. If we're looking for imperfections, we'll not have to look far! But the believer who's involved to please His Creator stays because he/she is committed to making things better.
